North-West and Limpopo Transport and Community Safety departments intensify Road Safety Operations

Eleven vehicles were discontinued for being unroadworthy and one undocumented person was arrested in a joint law enforcement operation on R101 arterial road. The joint law enforcement operation began early on Friday morning at Maubane outside Hammanskraal. This is where North West, Limpopo, Gauteng and Mpumalanga Province borders are converging.

The operation manned by traffic and police officers from Gauteng, Limpopo and North West stopped about 464 vehicles in two hours during the raodblock operation. There was a mobile testing station on side and 89 vehicles were tested of which one was impounded. Other stakeholders at the operation with message of safer festive season were Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), Bakwena and the South African Breweries.

Earlier on the day, North West MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, Sello Lehari was joined by his Limpopo counterpart, MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya at the local primary school, Kosea Moeka Primary in Moretele. Both MECs expressed messages of hope and appealed to learners to focus on their studies and avoid anything that may hinder their progress.

“Labour in your studies now and live better in future. Avoid pitfalls of alcohol and substance abuse as that will destroy your future’, appealed MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya.

The school has among others produced MEC Sello Lehari. He handed bags to 141 learners, the goodies included road safety equipment and much needed personal protective equipment.

“Almost every year this time, we are hoping and wishing for safer festive season. But hopes and wishes will not provide safety unless we change. You will be surprised how much impact small behavioural changes may have”, said MEC Lehari.
The success of the operation organised by North West Traffic Management in Moretele District led to commitment by both MECs to have another one soon.

Meanwhile both MEC accompanied Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula, who on Thursday, 03 December 2020, launched the 2020 Festive Season's Operations and openned the newly constructed ring- road infrastructures in Polokwane.
